In essence, copyright acts as a guardian of creativity, fostering an environment where artists are encouraged to innovate without fear of their work being used or manipulated without their consent. This protection not only acknowledges the dedication required for creative development but also serves as an incentive for others to engage in artistic pursuits.

Against the backdrop of contemporary technological progress and the concerted pursuit of substantial advancements within the domain of legal frameworks, the enactment of the Copyright Act 2022 (“Act”) was passed on Wednesday, 6th April, 2022. This legislative milestone received official assent from the former President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday, 17 March 2023. This legislative stride signifies a purposeful response to the evolving landscape of creative production and dissemination, reflecting an earnest endeavor to address the intricate interplay between intellectual property rights and technological innovation.
The objectives of the Act encompass several key aspects. These include the protection of authors’ rights, ensuring they receive due recognition and fair compensation for their intellectual endeavors. Additionally, the Act aims to establish suitable limitations and exceptions that enable broader access to creative works. Furthermore, it seeks to provide adherence to pertinent international copyright standards.
The Act by its commencement clause repeals the Copyright Act, Cap C28, laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 and enacts the Copyright Act 2022 to provide for the regulation, protection and administration of copyright.
